To May, Corsicana TX, April 22nd 1924

Below is the letter I wrote about a few days ago.

FYI: The writer wrote on a note pad and put page numbers at the top of each page so I have included these in between the paragraphs. I do not correct any spellings, just type word for word. Enjoy.

Corsicana, Tex

Dearest May:

I have been intending to write you for several months but have been real busy. I went to Dallas yesterday & spent the day. My sweetie came from Abilene & we spent the day together.

He gave me a beautiful engagement ring. It is over 1/2 carat perfect stone & the mounting is platinum.

I am going to get married the first part of June if I don’t change my mind.

You will see I am writing this letter on the installment plan but I had to stop & go to work.

I rec’d the pretty Easter card which you sent me & I was glad to be remember by you.

This is certainly a pretty day & I presume it is much warmer here than

it is in Ariz. I was surprised to learn that you are in Arizona as I thought you was teaching near Clovis.

Mama gave me a beautiful Walnut, cedar lined “Hope Chest Xmas & I have been trying to get something in it before I get married but haven’t much.

I have six sheets a few pillow cases, material for bed spread, lunch cloth & cup towels.

I have several hand towels, cup towels & about six pieces of aluminum.

While I was in Abilene I bought a beautiful dinner set of imported china, 40 pieces & they are stored there with six gobblets, six sherberts & a pitcher which are of thin cut glass.

I have about decided that I wont have time to make anything else other than tedds gown etc.

I have material to make a honey dew voile gown but I don’t even expect to get it made.

We are all tickled that you and Pat are married & I hope you will be happy together. When are you going to Breckenridge?  I know you cant hardly wait. Fleming (my sweetie) & myself are going to get married down here at the parsonage. His mother wants to come but I don’t want any one there. Would you? If we had a

nice home I wouldn’t mind having anyone but as we are not going to marry at home I don’t want anyone.

He wants to marry on the seventh of June & I want it to be on the tenth.

I wish I was all ready married so I wouldn’t have to worry about it.

Write & tell me all about it, if the ceremony scared you etc. I count the days every day.

The time seems long. I was operated on in Feb. Had my tonsils & adenoids removed & the ether surely did make me sick.  I feel so much better & haven’t been bothered with sore throat. Pats tonsils are in a very bad condition & I wish he would have them removed.

Bad tonsils cause so many diseases & poisons the system so I am extremely

glad mine are gone even if I did have a hard time when they were removed.

Joan is with us now. She surely is a sweet child but will not say “please” “yes mam” etc. She is real pretty too.

I have some sweet peas & nasturtiums about six inches high & of course I am real proud of them.

If you have any pictures I wish you would send them even if you want them back I will return them.

I would give anything to be in Arizona, however I imagine it is very much like New Mex. After living in Tex. I wouldn’t think of going back to New Mex again.

Heres hoping you will excuse me for writing with a pencil & also excuse the English

I use. Since I am no longer a school teacher I feel free to say anything to suit myself & it is a fine feeling too.

Fleming wants me to bob my hair but mama objects. How do you like bobbed hair. I know it is cool & easy to comb.

This is about all the “raving on” I can do this time. I guess I will see

you sometime this summer. Abilene is about 70 miles from Breckenridge.

Write me real soon & tell me about the wedding n everything.

Lots of love,

Your sister in law

When Pat wrote of you he spoke of you as being the “Little Dear”

The End.

Until we meet again….

Unknown Lost Treasure

Have you ever looked for one thing and found something else?  Something you did not even know you were looking for?

I found a lost treasure, a treasure I did not even know existed.

What was that treasure? A letter. A love letter. A handwritten love letter. A old handwritten love letter.

My family and friends know that I have pen pals. I love writing to people. I love getting that handwritten letter in the mail. I love reading about what is going on in other peoples lives. I love history.  I love learning about different cultures and ways of life. I love knowing someone took the time to write a letter.

So last month my hubby and I were driving across country and we stopped in this huge antique mall called Whoopie Bowl in El Paso, TX. This place is wonderful and if you ever have the chance to stop in I high recommend it! While we were looking around, and we never did get to see everything lol, I found a book section. I love books!!  As I was looking over them I found a victory garden book called Crockett’s Victory Gardens. I love reading about victory gardens, so of course I got the book.  Afterwards we got back on the road and I started looking through the book. Well almost to the very back of the book I found a letter.

11 pages of yellowed note pad paper, handwritten to May from her Sister-In-Law on April 22nd, 1924 in Corsicana Texas.

No not a love letter, but a letter none the less. History. Real Lives.

And a new fascination for me…..

Until we meet again….

A year away…

It has been a year since I wrote on this blog….hmm I am not sure how I feel about that. In some respect I am okay with it. This blog was never to be a everyday writing venue, but still I did think I would have wrote in it more.   The other part of me is sad that I have not wrote more, to me that means work and life have taken over. I guess that is the way life works right?

Well that is okay, I can work with this!

A lot has changed in that year that I have been “away” lol. For one we moved…..far away….as in on the other side of the country lol. We were in Arizona and as of right before Christmas we are now back in Florida on our way to (maybe) South Carolina.

We put our house in AZ up for sale on Dec 31st and thankfully it sold back in Jan. So we do not have to think about it getting broken into or sitting on the market for a long time. We have a house here in FL that we have been renting out but are back now to do some repairs and updates while we look at houses in SC.

Do you have any areas in SC you love? We are looking at the Charleston area.

So my blogs title is Golden in the Valley and I started this blog out there in AZ and thought the name was fitting because of the town we lived in “Golden Valley” lol. Even the photo on the front page is from there. It was one of the mountains we could see from our back porch. Such a lovely view. It always reminded me of a far away castle and castle walls.

Now I will have to see if I decide to keep the name or not, but I can update the photo. I kinda like Golden in the Valley and even with our move to SC we will still have a valley to enjoy as we like houses with lots and lots of land.

So is anyone still out there? What do you think of the name? Have you ever left your blog for months at a time?

Until we meet again…

After much thought and talks with my wonderful DH, I have decided to open up an Etsy shop called “The Sorting Hatt”. Those who know me, will know the significance of the name. Now time to stock it lol.

Have you ever shopped on Etsy? What do you like and dislike about it?

Edited 2-22-15: Here is the link to our shop. Come take a look and let me know what you think!

Oh my…

It has been a while since I have posted anything. The end of last year was busy and the beginning of this year has been even busier! With changes at work (new job promotion, thank you very much!) , major surgery, changes at home (remodeling another room), and life in general it has been exciting, tiring times.

I have never been one to post each week or on a regular basis, so I do hope that you will forgive me and check back in every once in a while to see if I am still alive lol. Signing up for email notification is always a good and optional thing!

Until we meet again….

Bountiful Basket

Every Saturday I drive up to the local park.  I always get there a bit early because I normally have work right after and then lunch with my hubby. The park is about 5-8 minutes away from my home, an easy drive and well worth the $15 I spent the previous Monday.

Why did I spend $15 on Monday to go driving on Saturday?  Bountiful Basket

I have been doing this same routine for a few months now.  On Monday at noon I log into the website, look for my state, select a basket, look at what other wonderful items they have available this week, and then place my order. $15 well spent!

The first time I heard about BB I thought what is the difference between doing that or getting it from the store.  Everywhere I read said that it was well worth the money. So after talking things over with my husband we decided to try it for one week.  We have throw $15 away before lol so what could it hurt.
It was great!  We went to pick up our basket and saw all the different things we got.
Below is what Bountiful Basket says we might get in the basket.
On Bountiful Baskets website site, it states:
How do I know what is in the Bountiful Basket?
Each week different items will be in the Bountiful Basket! We base the basket contents on what is in season, high quality, good value, and local. We generally have 6 fruit items & 6 vegetable items. We focus on what would be well received in our homes, and the extensive surveys we’ve done with participants over the past 5 years to know what families eat.
After we got home, I sat everything out on the counter. I hate that I did not take a photo but I did write down everything we got in that one basket.
We got:  Swiss chard, 4 green apples, 8 plums, 4 bell peppers, 2 mangos, celery, head of lettuce, 4 tomatoes, 4 huge baking potatoes, 1 bag of grapes, and 4 peaches.
So just to be sure I was getting my monies worth, I took that list with me on my shopping trip.  I  picked up the same size items that I had gotten, and if it was by the pound then I weighted how many I got in the basket and wrote down the price of everything that I had gotten. All in all, after adding everything up I had received $37.17 worth of fruit and veggies for $15. I could not believe it lol!
So of course I had to try again. The following week I did everything that same and that time after adding everything up I got $36.59 worth of food for $15! I was hooked!
Ever sense then I have been ordering a basket every week and I always keep an eye on the special stuff they offer for that week also.  It does seem to change sometimes and the price seems great for the special offerings, but I have of yet to order a special basket.  Below is what Bountiful Basket says about their special offerings.
What type of special offerings does Bountiful Baskets have?
Occasionally we will have the following! Be sure to participate each week so that you don’t miss out.
Produce By the Case: Utah Peaches, Citrus, Tomatoes, Pickling Cucumbers, Apples, Pears, Chiles, etc.
Bread Products: Sandwich Bread, Hamburger / Hotdog Buns,
Ciabatta, Chile Cheese, Cinnamon Raisin & Other Specialty Breads
Ethnic/Specialty Produce Packs: Italian, Asian, Mexican, Guacamole, Party Produce Pack (think Guacamole, Salsa, and things you dip in ranch!)
Pantry Items: Rice, Beans, Granola, Olive Oil, Canola Oil, All Natural Nut Butters
Decadent Deserts with 100% Butter, No hydrogenated oils or corn syrup
So I have been meaning to write this post and post a photo of one of my baskets. Well I picked up my basket today and took 2 photos. The first photo is at the park as we are looking over what we got for that week and the second photo is when we got home. I took 2 photos because we get so much food that I stop by and give my dad and step-mom some of it.
I do hope that if Bountiful Basket it available in your area, that you will check it out! We love it!!
BTW I did not get paid for this post in any way, just wanted to share my opinion of Bountiful Basket!!!!
Do you have something in your area like this? Do you shop with Bountiful Basket?

Titanic in Southampton

Everyone who knows me, knows that I am a Titanic fan. Maybe even a fanatic…
I have been looking for years for the right cross stitching pattern. I have come across a few but there was always something I didn’t like about the pattern. To small, ship to far away, no action, no color, or some other reason.
A few months ago I came across a site that had 2 Titanic patterns. One of those patterns was Titanic in Southampton. I fell in love with it. I actually have a postcard with this same photo on it. This pattern is going to take a long time to do, but I am up for the challenge.
I found the pattern on Celtic Rose Needlecraft’s site. You can click on their name to go to the pattern and site.  I have to give a shout out to Jacquie! She was so helpful. I had questions about the pattern before ordering it, wanting to make sure it was the one for me and she answered all of them and to make it even better, when I emailed her she always replied within 10-15 minutes of me sending my email. That ladies and gents is true customer support!
There are 15 pages of just the pattern itself, 18 pages (included instructions and floss guide) in total.
Because I am adding this to my WIP list, I will be working on one page at a time. I hope to be done with it by April 15th, 2014.
We are hoping to frame it with postcards in different mediums of the same photo going around it.
Below is the first part that I have finished and a photo of what the finished project should look like.
What do you think? Do you have something that you are passionate about?
